Vaughan Williams Ensemble
A Note from
the Vaughan Williams Ensemble
Greetings!
We are the Vaughan Williams Ensemble, a piano quintet with double bass formed in London with a shared love of the remarkable repertoire written for this unique combination of instruments.
Taking our name from Ralph Vaughan Williams, whose Piano Quintet in C minor lies at the heart of our repertoire, we are especially drawn to the landscape of English chamber music. We also enjoy exploring wider repertoire from Schubert’s much loved Trout Quintet to works by Louise Farrenc, Johann Nepomuk Hummel and Hermann Goetz, alongside contemporary British music such as Judith Weir’s Song of Departure which is performed as an homage to the Schubert Ensemble.
The Schubert Ensemble has been a key inspiration to us from the start, and Judith Weir’s Song of Departure was written for them as a way to say goodbye before their retirement after 35 years, so we find it appropriate to open our programmes with this piece to say hello from us!
We have also benefited from the guidance of renowned violist and composer Simon Rowland-Jones. A founding member of the Chilingirian String Quartet and an internationally recognized scholar of chamber music, Simon has provided vital mentorship and coaching to the ensemble as we have grown.
Following on from our first performances at London’s 1901 Arts Club and the North Norfolk Music Festival, we are excited to continue this journey together, discovering new repertoire, bringing lesser known music to the concert platform and sharing the works we love with audiences across the UK and beyond.
We hope to see you soon!
